Centreville’s Spring
A hundred years ago, travelers passed through Centreville via a major road that led west toward the Blue Ridge. Now, if you’re an Interstate 66 commuter, you know not much has changed. Take a trip at a time when that path is far less traveled to discover a wealth of heyday offerings.

Birds, bees and … bluebells. Bull Run Regional Park’s Bluebell Trail earns its namesake each year this month when the wildflowers expand into bloom for about a week (7700 Bull Run Drive, Centreville; 703-631-0550). Explore the 1.5-mile trail mid-April and witness more than 25 varieties in bloom. Entry is free for folks living in Alexandria, Arlington, the City of Fairfax, Fairfax County, Falls Church and Loudoun. Take a swing at a quick lesson and round of golf at Fairfax National Golf Club (16850 Sudley Road, Centreville; 703-631-9226). The outdoor sport suits an April weekend to a tee. Golfers awe upon the course’s gently rolling, beautifully manicured fairways and towering shade trees. A 30-minute lesson runs about $50, and the price of 18 holes varies depending on the time you play. Follow in the footsteps of tradition to Heart in Hand Restaurant and Caterers (7145 Main St., Clifton; 703-830-4111). What used to be the largest general store in Fairfax County has served such notables as Christopher Reeve and Maya Angelou. Southern-style dishes like Baked Brie with Mango Chutney keep mouths watering for more. If your April to-do list includes the words “hardy” and “compost,” get a start on your gardening at Cox Farms (15621 Braddock Road, Centreville; 703-543-6305). Now to early June, the farm’s 21 greenhouses explode into natural colors. Cox offers both annuals and perennials, and customers return every year specifically in search of their hanging baskets.
