Dillydally in Del Ray

An Alexandria community that has truly come full circle, Del Ray welcomes those who seek eclecticism. Unique restaurants, diverse shopping and a funky art scene provide city-dwellers and stressed commuters a respite from big-name brands and fast crowds.

A departure from regular nightclub scenes, the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.; 703-549-7500) is a seated music hall showcasing varying artists almost nightly. The prices are music to everyone’s ears, with tickets ranging from around $25 to $50. Arrive early for the best seats—they’re first come, first served. Take your pooch (optional) and join the fun at Simpson Stadium Dog Park (Monroe Avenue at Route 1). This fenced park provides leash-free enjoyment for pets and families. A regular social gathering spot for locals and visitors, the park has water fountains for both two- and four-legged community members. “When friends and family visit us from out of town, we take them to Evening Star Cafe (2000 Mount Vernon Ave; 703-549-5051) for the crab cake eggs Benedict,” said Nora Stelter, who lives in Old Town. She and her husband, Nathan, also can’t live without The Dairy Godmother’s (2310 Mount Vernon Ave.; 703-683-7767) frozen custard, just down the street. Elizabeth Moulds of Arlington said, “Del Ray’s a laid-back place free of franchises.” A Show of Hands (2204 Mount Vernon Ave.; 703-683-2905), one of many area boutiques, deserves a round of applause for fitting right in. Representing both established and new local artists, the shop carries unique and diverse handcrafted artwork that makes a perfect one-of-a-kind gift—for others or yourself!
