Bound South to Welcome Spring
After months of indoor activity, it’s time to get outside and enjoy the (hopefully) rising temperatures. Western North Carolina’s spring arrives early, with average temperatures of around 63 degrees. So roll the windows and take a drive into the Blue Ridge Mountains.

While in the vicinity, don’t miss Looking Glass Falls (U.S. Route 276, about five miles north of the entrance to Pisgah National Forest). Easily accessible, this watery wonder attracts travelers near Brevard. Steps lead down to 60-foot falls, with photo spots dotting the railing near the road. The name is derived from Looking Glass Rock, where water freezes into a nature-made mirror. On the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Mt. Pisgah Trail (Blue Ridge Parkway, 0.75 miles from mile marker 408) reigns supreme. With panoramic views from the pinnacle of Mt. Pisgah, hikers regularly stomp this trail on clear days. The mile-and-a-half trek has switchbacks and rock steps, which make the climb manageable. Enjoy the platform at the top, which looks out over the French Broad River valley. Follow your nose (or your growling belly!) to The Bier Garden (46 Haywood St., Asheville; 828-285-0002), almost directly across the street from Malaprop’s. Though the restaurant boasts an extensive American fusion menu and expansive wine selection, the true draw is the selection of more than 200 beers. Plus, the burgers are arguably the best in Asheville. After the hiking, head over to Asheville to pop into Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe (55 Haywood St., Asheville; 828-254-6734). An independent bookstore with character bursting from the seams, Malaprop’s boasts a large local section. The shop also hosts book signings and events almost daily. Re-energize with a cup o’joe from the in-house coffee shop while you browse.
