Off Route 50 with the Family

Shop, skate, eat and see a foreign film, then bring the spa to you. Body Image Studio’s mobile spa director Maria Conde recommends at-home manicures or pedicures for teens and massages for adults.

At Cinema Arts Theatre (Route 236 and Pickett Road in the Fair City Mall; 703-978-6991; 703-978-6853), “every other row has seats that adjust for cuddling,” said Ginny McGowan, who sells tickets and concessions. The theater is smaller than most, with only six screens, and specializes in foreign films, with concessions to match—gourmet sandwiches, hummus, baba ganoush and pita. The only thing Henry Weisiger, manager of the Fairfax Ice Arena (3779 Pickett Road, Fairfax; 703-323-1132), can guarantee is “a lot of fun.” Come for a public skate, or, if your triple lutz skills are up for it, a freestyle skate. Weisiger recommends bringing clothing for temperatures ranging from 35 to 65 degrees, medium-weight socks and mittens. It may not look like much, but inside Bombay Bistro’s (3570 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax; 703-359-5810) unassuming exterior is one of the area’s best Indian restaurants. Joseph Pramod, manager, recommends the tandoor rockfish, marinated in yogurt and spices and cooked in a clay oven, and kulfi, flavored Indian ice cream. Whatever the weather outside, it’s always snowing in Fair Oaks Mall’s (11750 Fair Oaks, Fairfax; 703-359-8300) 28-foot snow globe. Walk through the display, shop at one of their 195 stores and visit Santa. If the line for Santa is too long, Chris Poleto, general manager, recommends writing him a letter at their North Postal station instead.
