Slummin’ it with ‘Slumdog’

Yo!!! Tis Friday yet again, it’s getting colder outside and you’re gonna need somewhere to go entertain yourself when you want to take a break from shopping.

Perhaps if you’re hanging with a bunch of dudes this weekend, you’ll want to take in the ol’ ultra-violence of “Punisher: War Zone,” based on the comic book character about whom no one seems to be capable of making a good movie. However, you could do worse than check out “Slumdog Millionaire” over at the Cinema Arts Theatre. It was just named the best movie of 2008 by the National Board of Review (a bunch of critic-types who know enough stuff to make these kinds of tough calls), was directed by the talented Danny Boyle (whose diverse filmography includes everything from “Trainspotting” to “Millions” to “28 Days Later”) and stars a whole bunch of Indian actors you’ve probably never seen before. No matter – this drama, based on the Vikas Swarup novel “Q and A,” follows an orphan’s rise from the streets of Mumbai to winning big on the country’s top game show to getting questioned by the cops, and is getting crazy good press. Count me in! (Check out the trailer below.)

Tuesday will be a great day to go Christmas shopping (or shopping for you) for new release DVDs. The major release? Only the best movie of the year, “The Dark Knight.” (Take that, National Board of Review.) You know you’re gonna get it – only question is, what edition you’re getting: single-disc edition? Two-disc special edition with digital copy? Blu-ray with digital copy? Limited edition Blu-ray in very cool Batpod holder? There’s also the fourth season of “Lost,” giving you a month to catch up before the fifth season starts next month; the complete series of two exceptional HBO dramas, “The Wire” and “Deadwood”; and the the Blu-ray debut of the adaptation of Frank Miller’s “Sin City.”

Know of any neat holiday gatherings happening in the next few weeks? Give me the skinny at novapoppin@gmail.com.
