The Proposal (according Cecil): We vacationed in Oahu in May of 2008. I usually supervise packing for both of us, but this time I had nothing to do with Joe’s luggage. Upon our arrival, while Joe was in the shower, I went looking for something in his suitcase. I haven’t been looking for long, when here comes Joe saying, “What are you looking for in there?” I found his behavior odd so I told him jokingly, “What do you have in there, porn?!” I didn’t think anything of it, even though my maid of honor kept telling me that “this is when IT’s gonna happen …”

Two nights later, we had dinner, and our way back to the hotel, Joe suggested taking a walk on the beach. Then, he stopped me in my tracks, gently touched my face and said (not in the exact same words but close!), “Six years ago, when we came here to celebrate the first anniversary of our being together, I gave you a ring, symbolizing my promise to love you forever.” Then he reached for his wallet, where he had a ring the entire night! He said, “Will you marry me?” I cried and of course said “Yes!”

And we hugged and kissed and cried under the stars with the sound of the waves. We even had an audience; there were some homeless guys hanging out on a little boat on the beach nearby. That’s when we decided to go back to our room, just in case … ha ha!
