Tryol Hill Park opens in Arlington
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Aug. 29 from 7-7:30 p.m. to celebrate the completion of Tryol Hill Park, which offers a new futsal court, picnic shelter, restroom facility (opening soon), walking path, additional seating and a playground (installed during phase three).
Pesticides sprayed at Kings Park Park and Ted Grefe Park
Fairfax County has identified cases of West Nile Virus carried by Culex mosquitoes this year, and in trap sites at Kings Park Park and Ted Grefe Park, West Nile Virus carried by another group of mosquitoes, Aedes, has also been identified. As a result, on Aug. 27, the Fairfax County Health Department decided that in an attempt to reduce the virus’s spread to humans, it was necessary to spray pesticides at Kings Park Park in Springfield and Ted Grefe Park in Fairfax. The pesticides should not harm people or their pets, but those that are sensitive to chemicals may experience breathing problems and irritation of the eyes, skin, nose or throat, in which case residents are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider.
Wilton Woods Playground Replacement Project kicks off
Contractors are making their way onto the Wilton Woods playground during the week of Aug. 27, initiating a $120,000 project that will replace all existing equipment with new ones, as well as add new borders and subsurface drainage. Weather permitting, the park may reopen as early as late September 2018.
Ashburn Park will close on Aug. 31 and potentially reopen in October
On Aug. 31, all of Ashburn Park (43645 Partlow Road, Ashburn), including its playgrounds, will close to repair the eroded creek wall and also replace two bridges’ footings, decking and guardrails. Work is expected to wrap up in October 2018.
Fall Native Plant Sale at Long Branch Nature Center slated for Sept. 22
Those looking to add a few new native elements to their gardens can do so either by preordering plants before Sept. 12, or showing up to the Long Branch Nature Center’s plant sale in person on Sept. 22 between 1-4 p.m. Those ordering in advance should pick up their plants Sept. 21 from 3-6 p.m., or on Sept. 22 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Ribbon-cutting ceremony for Griffith Park playground set for Sept. 29
On Sept. 29 at 10 a.m., local officials and members of the general public will gather at the new and improved Griffith Park playground located at 2013 Griffith Road, Falls Church. Through an $80,000 project, the playground received a fence, new drainage system, borders, new equipment and additional features such as swings and interactive panels.
