Technology evolves every day, and with that comes the need for computer literacy for 21st century living and employment opportunities.
It also means that kids of all ages have higher access to more and more video games every year. Code Ninjas, a kids coding center opening in Gainesville on Feb. 11, is combining children’s love of video games with educational components that will prepare them for future employment opportunities.
Code Ninjas teaches students how to program and code by using games like Scratch, Minecraft and Roblox. The kids aren’t just playing the games, but building them.
The program is aimed toward children ages 7-14 and has a martial arts-theme. Students walk inside the “dojo” and are called coding ninjas. They also start out as “white belts” and can advance up to black belt status.
The full curriculum is made up of nine belts, and Belt-Up celebrations are held when a student progresses up, receiving color-coded wristbands to mark their level. By the time a student finishes the program, he or she will publish an app in an app store.
Besides video games, Code Ninjas also teaches coding programs for robotics, drones and other STEM activities. There are flexible weeknight drop-in programs, as well as a variety of camps offered.
