2004 Mount Vernon Ave., 703-549-3444; Alexandria; www.planetwineshop.com
Open 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
Neighborhood Restaurant Group wine director Juliana Santos keeps circa 1,500 bottles in the Planet Wine catalog—a globe-spanning collection displaying neighborly sensibilities.
Santos cycles through around a dozen Virginia wines at any given time, but quite naturally gravitates toward favored producers (Barboursville, Linden, Veritas, Chrysalis).
While she’s smitten with Spain, Santos says Australia and Portugal have developed quite the loyal following. “It’s interesting to see what Del Ray enjoys,” she notes.
Adventurous tipplers can explore new terroir via the Petit Pack (mostly seasonal pairings) or Planet Pack (a sixer of thematic pours for under $75), while cash-strapped connoisseurs can comb the twin “30 under $15” stacks (one white, one red) for budget-friendly gems.

Open 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday.
Westover Market beverage manager Devin Hicks unveiled his “Great Wall of Beer,” a who’s who of craft brews that occupies roughly half of the neighborhood shop, roughly three-and-a-half years ago, judiciously adding to his hop hound-prostrating collection while always enjoying the journey. He currently boasts 777 different beers— “Can’t wait to hit 1,000,” he quips—many of which are routinely featured at their weekly Saturday tastings or enjoyed al fresco (at least, until the supply is exhausted) on the adjoining beer garden. Standouts include Bell’s Two Hearted Ale, Dogfish Head’s 60-minute IPA, Sierra Nevada seasonals, assorted Chimay offerings and canned-do poster boy Dale’s Pale Ale.
Red, White & Bleu

Open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon-6 p.m. Sunday.
“Ten years ago I knew nothing about wine. I was a beer and tequila enthusiast,” Red, White & Bleu founder James Roth confessed to a crowd of aspiring winetrepreneurs earlier this year. He’s obviously broadened his tippling horizons in the interim, an education evidenced by the 500-600 boutique labels—including budget buys showcased at an under-$10 rack, conversation-starting sparklers (Nahuel Bubbles, Grotta del Sole Gragnano, The Chook sparkling shiraz) and a closeouts shelf shearing 10 percent off whatever (discards ranging from $200 California cabernets to local whites)—and dozens of craft brews (hop hounds take note: the shop hosts beer tastings the first Friday of each month) proudly displayed at his charming Falls Church shop.
Salute! Wine Market
111 N. Loudoun St., Winchester; 540-535-2171; www.salutewinemarket.com
Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
Salute! owners David and Dawn Dobersztyn pride themselves on maintaining over 1,000 choice selections in their globe-spanning inventory, a collection that pays homage to well-established wine regions (Bordeaux, Marlborough, Napa, Rioja)—with a special nod to Italy (David’s ancestral home)—the world over. But they’re also incredibly well-versed in the native pressings that surround them, stocking their carefully policed shelves with dozens of Virginia wineries and almost as many Old Dominion-ified varietals (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Claret, Concord, Gewürztraminer, Merlot, Norton, Petit Verdot, Riesling, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Viognier). They also carry nearly a dozen organic and biodynamic producers, a budding field already clearly in their crosshairs.
