Could The Block be the most important cultural phenomenon to happen in Northern Virginia within the last decade?
OK, that might be a bit much (it’s worth a look though) but the always buzzing Annandale food hall knows exactly how to get in front of trends, and give us what we want to eat.
The latest stall opening is Mama Mei’s with hot fried chicken, joining NoVA’s Wooboi (Herndon) and Hot Lola’s (Ballston Quarter) in the fried chicken boom.
But what is going to win all the Instagram likes this summer is Snocream’s chelo chelo. The ice cream stall concocted the portmanteau from the Vietnamese che (sweet dessert drink) and the Filipino halo-halo (shaved ice sundae).
It’s built in a tall cup and layered with a variety of textures, and for $2, comes with a scoop of ice cream.
For the coffee-themed chelo chelo, it starts with coffee jelly, than mochi, crushed Oreo, coffee jelly again, crushed ice, coconut milk and cold Vietnamese coffee. Other flavors include matcha and more tropical tastes like jackfrut and lychee.
It’s icy and creamy, and for the Viet coffee version, contains enough caffeine to keep one up for 72 hours. Hello to the summer of 2019. // The Block: 4221 John Marr Drive, Annandale
