From virtual writing workshops to a subscription service that sends buzzworthy favorites right to your door, Old Town Books owner Ally Kirpatrick has launched a variety of initiatives to keep her small business and its loyal employees secure during the pandemic, all while continuing to intrigue avid Northern Virginia readers. And, in recent weeks, Kirpatrick and her team have appealed to new audiences, with the launch of Old Town Books Cooks, a new book club for foodies and aspiring chefs alike.
Each month, a professional chef, writer and cookbook author will host the virtual conversation, discussing his or her recent release with book club members. Come Sunday, June 21, Vancouver-based author of Outlander Kitchen Theresa Carle-Sanders will host the very first session with local fans, where she’ll discuss her newest cookbook, Outlander Kitchen: To the New World and Back Again, set to debut on Tuesday, June 2.
The newest cookbook features over 100 recipes that combine traditional cooking with modern techniques and trends in mind. Plus, all readers and participants—who receive a copy of the book at 20% off when registering for the meeting—are encouraged to bring a snack or meal from the cookbook to enjoy while listening to Carle-Sanders.
For those interested in other subjects, Old Town Books typically hosts several other in-person book clubs—such as its Bad Romance and True Story clubs, focusing on romantic and nonfiction reads, respectively—which have now all turned to online formats.
