It’s officially leap year across the globe, and the active community of Northern Virginia is celebrating. Whether you’re an avid runner or tend to join the race simply for the celebratory beer, one of these five events is sure to appeal to you this leap day (Saturday, Feb. 29).
Leap Day Scavenger Hunt and Leaping Competition
Saturday, Feb. 29, 8-10 a.m.
Play games, get in some exercise and have fun this leap day with the local community. Whether you choose to participate in Challenge One, where you’ll be tasked with leaping further than your counterpart from a standing position, or attempt to collect as many toy frogs while running the 5K route, the choice is yours. // Burke Lake Park: 5715 Burke Centre Parkway, Burke; free
2020 Leap Year 5K & 10K
Saturday, Feb. 29, 8 a.m.
In an effort to raise funds for nonprofit Dare2tri, which aims to positively impact the lives of athletes with physical disabilities, Bishop’s Events is hosting a 5K and 10K race for leap day. Walkers, strollers and runners are welcome to throw on their sneakers in the heart of Georgetown to celebrate. // Hains Point: Ohio Drive SW, Washington, DC; $30-$45
Leap Day 5K
Saturday, Feb. 29, 8:30 a.m.-noon
Celebrate this Saturday with a 5K race starting and finishing at Old Ox Brewery. Following the workout, a delicious brunch will be served, paired with a few beers, of course. // Old Ox Brewery Middleburg: 14 S. Madison St., Middleburg; $35
Leap Year 0.5K Race – A Race for Non-Runners
Saturday, Feb. 29, 2:29-5 p.m.
If running is not your thing, but you’re always up for a good time, this race is definitely for you. Following the short and entertaining run in Old Town Warrenton, adult participants will enjoy free, local beer from Altered Suds Brewery, Wort Hog Brewing Company and Wild Hare Hard Cider while children can indulge in free scoops of ice cream from Ellie’s Place. Leap Year Day 2.9-Mile Race
Saturday, Feb. 29, 2:29 p.m.
Take a nice, 2.9-mile jog through Theodore Roosevelt Island this Saturday with the local community of runners here in NoVA.
