This Saturday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., A Pea in the Pod at Tysons Galleria will showcase their newly renovated storefront. To celebrate, the brand’s style director Olivia Capone Myers will be giving one-one-one complimentary style sessions for expectant mothers. In preparation for the event, we chatted with Myers about the brand’s new collection, tips for dressing a changing body and the top five items every expectant mother should own.
Q: What are some things expectant mothers can do to stay on-trend/fashionable despite a growing baby bump?
Remaining true to your own style during pregnancy is paramount. Maternity clothing today means [finding] styles and trends that you love [and having them] fit your expecting figure. A Pea in the Pod interprets the season’s current trends specifically for moms-to-be. For instance, if you’re all about white jeans, you can find a pair that features our patented Secret Fit Belly, a seamless panel designed specifically to grow with you and tailored to fit both before and after baby. We also carry many pre-pregnancy designer favorites like AG Jeans, DL1961, Genetic Denim, Paige and J Brand, so you can still wear the brands you know and love.
Q: What are the go-to spring/summer pieces in your collection?
There are three key trends for spring and summer that I love and work particularly well for maternity: the dress, peasant top and wide-leg pant. Versatile and comfortable, dresses continue to be a bump-flattering staple for moms-to-be with new dramatic hemlines and bold patterns. I especially love the printed caftan and sleeveless maxi dresses from the new and exclusive Rachel Zoe Collection for A Pea in the Pod. The peasant top or tunic is a maternity must-have that should be in every expecting woman’s closet this summer. From solids and stripes to pretty prints and cozy lightweight knits, these tops pair perfectly with your maternity leggings, jeans or shorts. Add a blazer for instant polish or a jean jacket for those summer nights. Pulling inspiration from the ’70s, the wide-leg jean is quickly becoming the must-have summer style.
Q: If you can’t afford to buy a ton of maternity clothes, what are some key pieces an expectant mother should invest in? What are some items in her closet already that she can make work?
Investing in some essential maternity pieces will not only keep you comfortable and take you through your whole pregnancy but beyond as well. I think many women may not realize they will need pieces for right after their baby is born and maybe for some time after.
There are five maternity staples all expecting mothers should have to carry her through pregnancy:
1. A great pair of maternity jeans you can practically live in and that work for almost any and every occasion.
2. A transitional top for layering.
3. A basic form-fitting tank, which can be worn throughout the entire pregnancy, even into the fourth trimester.
4. A go-to little black dress to pair with your favorite statement jewelry.
5. Ultimate must have: maternity bras. Most women wear bras that don’t fit properly. We encourage expecting mothers to visit A Pea in the Pod to have a free bra fitting with our sales associates.
These pieces can be mixed and matched to create many looks. A cardigan or a leather jacket you have already and your favorite accessories will put your own spin on these versatile and comfortable looks.
Q: What celebrity’s maternity style inspires you?
It has been so wonderful to see so many famous moms-to-be show off their maternity style recently. A Pea in the Pod has dressed many celebrity moms, and one of my favorites to watch recently has been Tiffani Thiessen. Expecting a little boy later this year, Tiffani has been spotted in chic and effortless dresses in prints and beautiful hues. I love how she shows off and celebrates her bump.
