There are many special events that occur in the month of September, but for followers of the fashion industry, all that comes to mind is Fashion Week season, which officially begins Friday, Sept. 6 at New York Fashion Week.
This fall, mastering the season’s trends doesn’t have to be challenging, as local wardrobe stylist Naina Singla knows a thing or two about taking runway looks to the streets.
“For the majority of women, they are not trendsetters or bloggers, they just need a functional wardrobe,” says Singla. “Having those foundational and fundamental sweaters, like a cardigan, crew neck sweater and one piece of cashmere, is where everyone needs to start.”
For the past nine years, Singla has made a name for herself in the DMV as a recognized style expert with her full-time personal styling business and her newest venture, CAPSULE, consisting of essential items needed in every woman’s wardrobe.
According to Singla, mastering fall fashion is all about having fun with your wardrobe and maybe even adding a few new pieces. Here, she shares four, sweater-based looks that are easy to achieve and on-trend too, as seen by these individuals thriving in the fashion industry.
We’ve heard turtle neck sweaters are in this year. What do you think?
Essentially, when you’re looking at the trends for fall and winter, we are definitely seeing the high turtle neck. This season, it’s creeping up all the way to your chin or past it, so the higher the better. I think the best way people are styling it is by pairing it up with high-waisted denim or plaid trousers. That is a huge trend this season. It creates a classic and sophisticated look. You are also seeing the mock neck sweater, which will look great layered under a slip dress.

How can women incorporate patterns into their fall wardrobe?
We are definitely seeing graphic prints this season. The classic fair isle sweater is going to be huge when it gets a bit colder, which we saw on the runway with popular brands like Celine and Chanel. It’s that traditional, geometric design used in knitwear that’s a big look. But in general, all kinds of designs, like plaids and geometric shapes will be bolder and big for the winter.

Is the oversized-sweater look still in?
Oversized is going to be huge. The way we are seeing it on the runway is paired with long, flowy skirts that can be mid-length or down to the ankle, completed with a chino shoe. The key with oversized sweaters is that you don’t want to size up, in fact you might even want to go a size down to avoid looking frumpy. Also, a half tuck helps because you can see your waistline. In most cases, when you’re wearing an oversized sweater, you definitely want to pair it with something a bit tighter on the bottom. Another trick to the look is belting the sweater with a big oversized belt to add a little detail.
How should layering be done correctly?
Layering sweaters is another massive trend for the season—we are seeing designers literally piling it on. In fashion, we tend to see something called an overlay, which is when one fabric is placed over another. This year, they are selling two-in-one sweaters, like they come sold stitched together. It’s been a huge thing: this idea of layering two sweaters together. Taking two of your own sweaters too, and placing them atop one another is a nice way to up your fashion game.
