Caring for a loved one as they age can be a difficult process; one filled with challenges and questions. That’s why on April 13, AARP Virginia will sponsor the annual “Navigating the Caregiving Journey” conference in Woodbridge.
The annual event serves to connect family caregivers with support, empowering them to make decisions through accurate insight and information. Many presentations will be held during the conference to educate attendees about how to care for an aging loved one, from personal decisions to legalities about Medicare.
Speakers for the event include Lisa McFarren-Polgar, Medicare and long-term care insurance specialist, and Dan Campbell, a licensed clinical social worker. McFarren-Polgar will discuss Medicare, including when Medicare pays for skilled nursing and when it does not, key times of the year to switch from one plan to another and what the difference is between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare. Campbell will speak on proven techniques to help caregivers deal with the daily stress they encounter.
Other presentation topics include elder abuse, getting the most from Medicare benefits, how to care for a loved one’s money, community resources, fraud protection and prevention and legal help.
The conference will also include an exhibitor hall and more intimate educational sessions, in addition to the lectures on the big stage. Representatives from local organizations and companies that offer products and services to family caregivers will be available to speak with attendees in the exhibitor hall.
The event will be held at All Saints’ Church, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is required to attend and costs $25, which includes a program guide, access to the exhibitor hall, educational sessions and lunch.
Respite care will be provided by Griswold Home Care NoVA West, but reservations must be made by April 1. Go here to fill out the necessary form.
