I love dogs … I know, that’s kind of a generic thing to say because, really, who doesn’t love dogs? (Seriously cat lovers, we will never agree on the dogs vs. cats debate.) I’ve had my eyes peeled for the perfect dog to adopt for quite some time now, and am going to try my luck at the Pet Fiesta this Saturday, May 4 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), which will also have pet contests and fashion shows, exhibitors, including pet rescue and nonprofit groups and, of course, guests walking around with their beautiful (leashed) doggies. -HG // Reston Town Center: 11900 Market St., Reston; free
Off to the races
As a kid, we used to go to an annual steeplechase race out in Ashburn. That particular race ended about a decade ago when the open field got turned into lovely homes and a golf course (My aunt and uncle now live there so I can’t be too mad). But the memories of that annual event remain a favorite from my childhood. So when I got married, I reignited the tradition with an annual tailgate at the Virginia Gold Cup out in The Plains every fall. I hope my kids will have similarly fond memories. This Saturday, however, we’re getting a babysitter and my husband and I are attending the spring Gold Cup solo. They’ve invited me to help judge the hat contest—and then I plan to have a mint julep or two. Say hi if you see me—especially if you’re wearing a fabulous hat! -KB // Virginia Gold Cup: 5089 Old Tavern Road, The Plains; general admission passes: $25, Member’s Hill passes: $55
Hey, neighbor
Nary a weekend goes by where cutey-cute Del Ray doesn’t have something going on for the creative, the parent, the dog owner. This Sunday, it’s the Del Ray Spring Pop-Up Market and I’m going to stroll over with my kids, chat with neighbors (literally, my next-door neighbor is the textile artist behind Tulusa; hi Sue!), and continue to be the poster child for yuppie suburban-ish life. -SG // Del Ray Spring Pop-Up: Pat Miller Neighborhood Square (Oxford Ave. and Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria); May 5, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
